The one thing that contributed most to the effectiveness of the story was irony. In this book God desides that that he has had enough of mans screw-ups, and that he wants to destroy them all. But rather than use His vast powers to destroy the earth, he sends an angel to set into place a very complicated plan so that we will destroy ourselves. Also, Satan sends one of his demonic minions to thwart the plans of Anyell the angel. This ironic because it attempts to make Satan and his kind the good guys even though this is changed by the end of the story. (If you intend to read this book skip the next sentence) Also in the story, the angel who God sent to destroy the earth falls in love with a human and stops the desrution of it.
