J. D. Salinger Essay, Research Paper

J.D. Salingers literary fame is overshadowed by the fact that he refuses to be famous, living as a recluse in New Hampshire. This should leave commentators free to discuss his small, marvelous body of work. But since newspapers are full of people on the trail of J.D. Salinger, there is little hope of this happening. He published stories of various lengths and one short novel. The β€œcatcher in the rye” is a first person narrative that shares some qualities with his other workk: an ear for colloquial speach, which conveys situations and states of mind with great economy, and a sympathy for precocious youths. Holden Caulfield’s story starting with his suspension from school and finishing in an institution, is crammed with hypersensitive observations on everything he notices around New York City, the capital of that β€œphoniness” that so unnerves him.
