It`s population is more than 9 million people. London was founded more then twenty centuries ago. The East End includes the poorer districts, the industrial center, the port, the London docks. The streets here are narrow and dirty, the houses are poor. Working class families live here. Great Britain is rich in world-famous places. Certainly among them there are famous university cities Oxford and Cambridge, Shakespeareβs birthplace β Stratford-upon-AvonΡ
Those who come to Oxford certainly are interested in its university most of all. It was founded in the 12th century. But there is no Β«universityΒ» as such in Oxford. The component parts of the University of Oxford are the colleges. Each college is practically autonomous. But they do not stand in isolation, they are mixed together with houses, shops and offices.
There is a prehistoric monument in Great Britain which is as interesting to the tourists as the Egyptian pyramids. This is Stonehenge. Stonehenge was built in order to calculate the annual calendar and seasons. There are a lot of places of interest in London. They are all worth seeing. On the north side of Trafalgar Square stands one of the world`s greatest art galleries. The National Gallery represents all schools of Western painting from the Italian Primitives to the early 20th century. Portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough can be seen here. Since the time of William the Conqueror the Tower of London has served as a fortress, a royal residence, treasury, mint and prison. Here many people were imprisoned and beheaded. Now it`s a museum. There is a legend about the Tower. It says that the Tower will fall if it loses its ravens. So the birds are carefully guarded. St. Paul`s Cathedral is the largest and the most magnificent church of the city. The High Altar forms a memorial to those who died in the two World Wars.
