Few chemicals affect people’s lives in as many ways as does sulfuric acid. It is used in making thousands of everyday products and has been called the single most important indutrial chemical. One of its most familiar uses is in automobile batteries. Sulfuric acid is alos used in such manufacturing processes as the production of fertilizers, drugs, detergents, and many metals. Sulfuric acid is widely empolyed as an electrolyte in storage batteries and in electroplating baths and is used to clean metals of oil and grease. The textile industry employs it in dyeing, bleaching, and mercerizing fabrics. It also is valuable in the manufacture of such products as soap, leather, glue, and gelatin and as an etching agent in printmaking and photoengraving. Sulfuric acid is also called hydrogen sulfate, is a dense, colorless liquid. A very imprtant industrial chemical, sulfuric acid is produced by the oxidation and dissolution in water of sulfer dioxide.
