TERMINAL SIDINGS / THE EFFICIENCY OF TERMINAL OPERATION
All tracks are subdivided into terminal sidings and special tracks. Terminal sidings serve for various operations. They include main tracks, reception sidings, departure sidings, sorting sidings, engine-shed sidings, carriage standage and cleaning sidings.
Reception sidings receive trains and enable engines to discharge immediately on arrival.
Departure sidings may be described as reception sidings for departing trains.
Sorting sidings are the lines where wagons are sorted for various destinations.
Engine shed sidings, carriage standage and cleaning sidings are used for serving engines and cleaning cars.
The correct track layout must ensure high efficiency and safety of terminal operation. The correct track layout ensures reliability of operation, flexibility for the rolling stock, a minimum amount of switching.
It reduces various delays of cars between operations. Therefore, tracks must be of sufficient length for average trains.
The proper location, arrangement and correlation of various tracks are vitally essential for the economical operation of the terminal.
